Reference #275: The First 90 Days
People may resist your proposed change agenda for the following reasons:
- Comfort with the status quo.
- Fear of looking incompetent (for example, if they have trouble adapting to the changes you're proposing).
- Threat to core values.
- Threat to their power.
- Negative consequences for their allies (that is, others they care about or feel responsible for).
They may also believe you're wrong in your assessment of the situation and hence the need for change, or at least for your specific proposed changes.
When you face resistance, seek to understand the reasons. You may be able to counter their arguments, help them better manage the change, and win them to your side.
