Reference #344: Thinking in Systems
Unless you exceed the limits of a system, resilience can be difficult to observe. And so without a full view of the system we often trade off resilience for stability, productivity, or some other more immediately recognisable system property. For example, just-in-time delivery — of products to retailers, or parts to manufacturers — has brought down costs in many industries. Yet this has been accomplished at the cost of making production systems more vulnerable to factors such as fuel supply, labor availability, and traffic flow and hence less resilient.
