Reference #452: Organizational Culture and Leadership

One approach to handling multicultural issues in a group is to focus on "cultural intelligence". This concept proposes that building understanding, empathy, and the ability to work with other cultures requires four capacities:

  1. Actual knowledge of some essentials of the cultures involved.
  2. Cultural sensitivity, or mindfulness about culture.
  3. Motivation to learn about other cultures.
  4. Flexibility to learn new ways of doing things.

Teams with higher cultural intelligence perform better than lower-scoring teams.
