Reference #477: Organizational Culture and Leadership
In addition to the six primary mechanisms by which leaders embed their beliefs, values, and assumptions in an organisation, there are also six secondary reinforcement and stabilising mechanisms:
- Organisational design and structure
- Organisational systems and procedures
- Rites and rituals of the organisation
- Design of physical space, façades, and buildings
- Stories about important events and people
- Formal statement of organisational philosophy, creeds, and charters.
In the early stages of a company's growth, these mechanisms are only supportive. They must be consistent with the primary mechanisms to work. But as an organisations matures, they become strong in perpetuating assumptions. In these later stages, where less culture creation occurs, they themselves become important primary mechanisms for maintaining culture.
