There three broad types of engineering management roles:

• Manager: you manage a team directly
• Director: you manage a team of managers
• VP: you manage an organisation

To grow into higher roles, focus not on team size but on scope. When you take on additional responsibility you gain experience without waiting for the organisation to have room for more senior roles.
