An environment of needing to "work harder" to solve mounting problem leads to the birth of hero programmers.

These people achieve short-term bursts of productivity due to long hours and lack of communication overhead (by doing everything themselves). But this leads other developers to feel disaffected as they are no longer able to contribute. This cycle drives the hero programer to burnout.

In this situation, your options are to kill the environment which breeds the hero programmer or to kill the hero programmer through burnout.
