#7a: Growth through the optimal level of discomfort.
Growth comes from stretching yourself beyond what is comfortable, and finding the optimal level of discomfort. At work, this can be through a stretch assignment — diverse, complex and challenging. This is categorically not "your current role, but with more staff".
Consider exercise. You grow when you push yourself slightly above your capabilities into the "Goldilocks zone", about 3% above your comfort level. And you grow fastest when you try something new, be that a new sport, or a new routine. (See also: beginner's gains.) And so it is with professional growth. (This is also an argument for cross-functional experience.)
