Reference #437: Organizational Culture and Leadership
All societies value both individuals and groups, in that neither make sense without the other. Yet cultures differ dramatically to the extent their espoused norms and values reflect deeper assumptions.
For example, while Australia is a more individualistic rather than collectivist culture, it has strongly espoused collectivist values. This leads to the "tall poppy syndrome" — the tall poppy is the one that gets cut down. It also leads to people not taking personal credit for their success.
